The Right to Read Film Screening

December 16, 2023 @ 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm

The Right to Read Film Screening

Come join us for an exciting film screening at the R.I.S.E. Demonstration Center on Martin Luther King Junior Avenue Southeast in Washington, DC, USA. This in-person event celebrates the power of literature and the importance of literacy for all. The Right to Read shares the stories of an NAACP activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read.

American reading levels have been far below grade-level for decades. In 2022, only one-third of children were reading at proficient levels. When a child doesn’t learn to read, their chances of incarceration, homelessness, and high school dropout increase. That’s why Oakland-based NAACP activist Kareem Weaver believes literacy is one of the greatest civil rights issues of our time and is fighting for change.

This event is designed to bring greater awareness to the urgency of building broader coalition and action across the District for improving DC literacy outcomes. The event will venture a panel discussion and local children’s book authors exhibiting their books.
